As part of Austin ISD’s historic $2.44 billion bond program, Wooldridge Elementary was identified for a full modernization of its aging 1969 facility. Quietly nestled within a north Austin neighborhood, the school has served as a trusted educational anchor for generations. When Austin ISD engaged our team, we were asked to evaluate whether the existing building could be restored to meet modern learning standards or whether a new facility would better serve students and the broader community. After rigorous programmatic and facilities analyses, we determined that a new building offered the greatest long-term value and the most flexibility to meet AISD’s evolving educational goals.
Inspired by the campus’s quail mascot, we developed the concept of “The Nest” as the guiding framework for the design. This idea, symbolizing care, growth, protection, and a sense of belonging, resonated strongly with students, staff, and community stakeholders. It became the foundation for decisions at every scale, from campus organization and building massing to interior character and materiality.
Our team designed the new Wooldridge Elementary as four interconnected building bars whose woven configuration metaphorically evokes the structure of a nest. At the heart of the massing, a protected central courtyard serves as both an outdoor classroom and a daily touchpoint for community life. Inside, warm wood tones, bold color accents, and abundant natural light reinforce a nurturing environment tailored to support diverse learning styles and the whole child.
The result is a modern, welcoming campus that honors Wooldridge’s legacy while providing an inspiring, future-ready learning environment for the next generation.
